Glowing light of the type occasion seen on marshy ground or near graves. The result of certain unusual atmostphereic conditions, or else created by burning marsh gases, these lights--otherwise called Jack-o'-lanterns--have often been considered of super natural oriign. Variously indentififed as ghosts or as malevolent imps, and assumed to be omens of death or disasters, such lights are said, by some, to lure humans into bottomless bogs. To escape their attentions, the best remedy is to drive a needle into the ground -- in which case the light will disappear into the eye of the needle. Whistling, mean while, should be avoided beacuse it is said to increase the chances of their appearance. Some stories are told, however, of such will-o'-the-wisps that have actually led lost humans back to safety.
